MARTINEZ, Calif., April 26, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Republic Services, Inc. today announced the opening of its first Northern California an organics pre-treatment facility, which will help Bay Area communities meet the requirements of a new state law requiring the diversion of food and garden waste from landfills. The installation eliminates the contamination of food waste collected from food companies. Contra Costa County, and produces clean organics that are converted into renewable energy through a partnership with the East Bay Municipal Utility District.

“As an industry leader in environmental services, Republic Services is committed to recovering key materials from the waste stream and providing diversion solutions to our customers,” said Pete keller, vice president of recycling and sustainability. “Organic is an emerging sector, particularly in California, offering us enormous potential to develop our activity and strengthen the circular economy. “

A state law (SB 1383) which comes into force January 1, 2022, will require every home and business in California recycle their food and garden waste. More than 500 commercial customers participate in recycling food waste through the RecycleSmart program of the Central Contra Costa Solid Waste Authority, which delivers food waste to the Republic Martinez establishment. The new facility is capable of handling 20 tonnes of food waste per hour. This is Republic’s second organic pretreatment operation in the state; its first opened in Anaheim in 2018. Republic is pursuing similar opportunities statewide.

“Republic Services has been a service provider for RecycleSmart for over 20 years, and they have always been innovative in their approach to recycling,” said Ken etherington, executive director of RecycleSmart. “We are very excited about Republic’s new pretreatment line to advance recycling in the community.”

After pretreatment, the clean organics are delivered to the East Bay Utility District Wastewater Treatment Facility in Oakland. Through anaerobic digestion, organic waste is converted into biogas, which is used to generate electricity to power the processing facility as well as operations at the nearby port of Oakland.

“This pre-treatment model is expected to expand the opportunities for EBMUD to receive more of this type of material and increase renewable energy production in the future,” said John hake, Senior Civil Engineer in the East Bay Utilities District.

In 2020, Republic Services was named Organics Recycler of the Year by the National Waste & Recycling Association, recognition of the company’s innovation and leadership in diverting food and garden waste from landfills. Recycling organics directly supports Republic’s sustainability goal of increasing the recovery of key materials from the waste stream by 40% by 2030.
