PHOENIX, December 1, 2021 / PRNewswire / – Republic Services, Inc. (NYSE: RSG) today announced the opening of the Sacramento the region’s first organic pre-treatment facility, which will help local communities divert food waste from landfills and turn it into renewable energy. A new California state law, SB 1383, to combat climate change comes into force January 1, 2022, and will require the majority of California homes and businesses recycle food and garden waste at facilities like this.

“Republic Services is proud to offer solutions to support California climate goals and the food waste recycling effort, ”said Mike Caprio, zone president. “As one of the state’s largest recyclers and composters, we continue to invest in infrastructure that will help our customers reduce their impact and deliver a circular solution. . “

The diversion of food and garden waste into recycling programs has a double benefit: this organic material can be recycled by converting it into renewable energy or a product like compost, and the diversion reduces emissions. To meet the requirements of the new state law, CalRecycle believes the state will need to double its current organics management infrastructure.1

Republic’s new facility accepts food waste collected from businesses in Sacramento County. The operation removes contamination such as plastic bags and produces clean organic material which is delivered to an anaerobic digestion facility. This facility converts organic matter into renewable energy which is used to power the facility and ultimately could be sold to the utility grid.

New Sacramento The facility is capable of handling 40,000 pounds of food waste per hour. This is the third pre-treatment operation for organic materials in the Republic, all of which are in California. The Company also owns and operates six composting facilities in the state. In 2020, the company processed more than 2.15 billion pounds of food and garden waste.

Republic Services has been named the 2020 Organics Recycler of the Year by the National Waste & Recycling Association, in recognition of the company’s innovation and leadership. Recycling organics directly supports Republic’s sustainability goal of increasing the recovery and circularity of key materials from the waste stream by 40% by 2030.
